Classical Academy fourth-grade student Maxwell Lawrence Roh and his second-grade sister Aliana Lee Roh recently competed in a Rubik’s Cube tournament at UC San Diego, where Aliana was the youngest participant in the event. The siblings competed, and served as judges, in the 2x2, 3x3, and Pyraminx categories. This marked Maxwell’s fourth competition since entering his first tournament at age seven, when he was also the youngest competitor. Since then, he has collected and learned to solve a wide range of puzzle cubes, from Pyraminx and Megaminx to an 11x11 cube. His personal best time on the 3x3 cube is 14 seconds. Inspired by her older brother, Aliana began cubing just over a year ago and has quickly found success. She recorded a personal best of nine seconds on the Pyraminx and even judged one of Maxwell’s solves during the competition. Both students said they enjoyed competing and judging, gaining experience alongside cubers of all ages while continuing to challenge themselves in speed and problem-solving.
