April 19, 2023

Classical Academy High School (CAHS) 9th-grade student, Mason Harvey, is an accomplished author, illustrator, and health advocate. Diagnosed with severe Crohn’s disease in June 2020, he started rigorous treatments that resulted in extended hospitalization. Mason spent this time storyboarding, writing, and illustrating a children’s book. Mason published the book, Not Your Average Slice of Pizza, to help others with chronic illnesses. He also helped pass California state law, AB1623, The California Restroom Access Act and was recognized on the Senate floor during the final vote.

“We are so thankful for The Classical Academy partnership and family,” stated Mason’s mom Michelle Harvey, “their support and flexibility have allowed him to excel during tough times and to feel empowered with his education.” Mason’s story was featured on Channel 10 here.

"Mason is an incredibly passionate and talented student and we are grateful he is thriving in our high school Independent Study program," stated CAHS Principal Stacey Perez, EdD.
