Student Earns National Recognition for Monarch Conservation Efforts

April 14, 2026

What began as a childhood curiosity has grown into a community-impact project for Coastal Academy High School tenth-grader Jaxon Vega, who recently earned a prestigious nationwide Carson Scholarship for his work in monarch butterfly conservation. Jaxon’s interest started in his grandparents’ backyard, where he raised monarch butterflies alongside his grandmother. Over time, that early experience developed into a commitment to protecting the species, which continues to face population decline. By middle school, Jaxon was educating others and inspiring action. His research on monarch conservation helped spark the creation of a Monarch elective and student-run garden at Coastal Academy elementary school. Today, Jaxon continues to expand his impact, supporting the program with supplies, sharing educational resources with families, and speaking to students about how small actions can make a difference. The Carson Scholarship recognizes academic achievement and meaningful service, highlighting the significance of Jaxon’s efforts. Looking ahead, he plans to continue growing his conservation work and encouraging others to get involved.
