Taking Control of Things that Matter

April 27, 2020

To say that we are living in unprecedented times is an understatement and a chance to press into advocacy efforts as parents enjoying charter public schools. With your son or daughter's education completely at home, here are three easy things you can be doing to elevate the importance of parent choice, charter schools, and public education in California. Let's not take anything for granted.1) Personal Advocacy:Place a sticky note on the bathroom mirror, or in another prominent place of your home, and advocate and remind yourself of what is

true. “Today can be a great day where learning happens. I get to choose my attitude, approach, and happiness. Today is a gift and a new beginning. Smile and breathe; I got this!” 2) Family Advocacy:Once a week, choose a day that works best for you, and plan to share a social media post highlighting your son or daughter’s success with the hash tag, #HomeSuccess This is an easy way for us to locate your posts and elevate the great work you are accomplishing at home.3) School Advocacy:

Once a month, take the time to contact your area legislator and let them know which school you attend, how important you believe charter public schools are to the community, and how your son or daughter has been having success with your particular school. This can be a fun assignment for your son or daughter to accomplish, as leaders love hearing from citizens. The more leaders know about your choices as a constituent, the more likely they are to vote to support charter public schools in our communities. Taking time daily, weekly, and monthly with advocacy efforts is a simple way for parents to be taking control of something that matters. When this is all said and done, and we return to some normalcy, let’s make sure that charter public schools are seen for the excellence and stability they provided for students, parents, and the community of public education.Cameron Curry is the Chief Executive Officer for The Classical Academies, an organization of award-winning, tuition-free, public charter schools serving 4600+ students in grades TK-12 in North San Diego County.
